Aging Studies: A Review on Inflammaging and Anti-Aging Strategies

The study of aging is a complex field, requiring multi-modal and multi-perspective investigations. There is significant evidence indicating that cellular senescence contributes heavily to organ damage and disease development in aging organisms.

Relatively, the aging process in organs and organisms often triggers inflammatory responses. Inflammatory-associated molecular patterns can promote cellular senescence which further induces more inflammation, effectively creating a harmful cycle (Fig. 1).

Understanding Inflammaging

During the aging process, the majority of bodily cells undergo senescence. This state is characterized by a dysfunctional condition and a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).

Immune cells are crucial for recognizing and eliminating senescent cells, but they can also be affected by SASP, leading to a phenomenon known as immunosenescence. Immunosenescence can detriment immunity’s response to infections and diseases, increasing the organism’s vulnerability to illnesses.

The accumulation of senescent cells can trigger inflammation in organs, leading to organ damage and a higher risk of age-related diseases. This process is exacerbated by positive feedback loops that intensify inflammation and organ damage, leading to further inflammation and an increasingly higher risk of aging-related diseases.

Aging Models, Cutting-Edge Technologies, and Anti-Aging Strategies

Inflammaging across spatial and temporal scales and the complex factors leading to aging. We also reviewed aging models, cutting-edge technologies in aging studies, and anti-aging strategies.

Considering that the ultimate goals of aging research are preventing and alleviating aging diseases and improving quality of life, our review showcases current progress and trends in aging studies. Hence, it provides a theoretical basis for developing new and feasible anti-aging strategies.
